Animation feature "The Dog of God" by the directors Raitis Ābele and Lauris Ābele will have its world premiere on June 6 at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival in New York, in the program "Tribeca Escape"
The Dog of God, made in the technique of rotoscopy, interweaves real historical events with ingenuity. The story takes place in Livonia, in the autumn of 1692, in the vicinity of what is now Mālpils in Zaube. When the relic of the church is stolen, a witch hunt begins and a dog of God arrives in the village, bringing people a mysterious gift from hell.
Tribeca Escape is one of the most visited and loudest programs of the festival, which traditionally shows psychological thrillers, mystical dramas, science fiction and fantasy films. The program is known for highlighting unusual, daring stories that often violate traditional cinema conventions. This is the right program in which to discover the next great stars of cinematography and bold artistic solutions.
The scriptwriters of the film are Ivo Briedis, Raitis and Lauris Ābele and the main animation artist Harijs Grundmanis. The creative team is complemented by chief animator Aigars Gercāns and cinematographer Mārcis Ābele. The ensemble of actors consists of Jurģis Spulenieks, Regnārs Vaivars, Einars Repše, Agate Krista and Kristians Kareļins. Produced by Raitis Ābele, Kristele Pudāne (Tritone Studio, Latvia) and Giovanni Labadessa (Lumiere Lab, USA). The production of the film is supported by the National Film Centre of Latvia (ERDF / REACT-EU project for the growth of Latvian film industry companies, promoting their professional performance).
In cinemas in Latvia, the film is planned to premiere in autumn 2025.
